Turkish carpet weaving is a traditional art, that over the years has integrated different cultural traditions. Its designs, motifs and ornaments reflects the political and ethnic history and diversity of the area. Within the group of oriental carpets, Turkish carpets are distinguished by their dyes, colors, designs, textures and techniques. For example, the carpets are tied with the ‘Turkish’ or symmetrical knot. Because they are often made by nomadic people, they have to use materials that are easily transportable. This means the material should be available during migration. That is why sheep and goats’ wool is used, along with natural dye that can be obtained from plants and minerals. These carpets usually have a red or blue field decorated with floral ornaments. Primary medallions are used, sometimes alternating with smaller stars, or medallions, intertwined with floral tracery. Their borders often have palmettos on a floral and leaf scroll. It is a very labor-intense product, as each step requires time, starting with preparation, spinning, dyeing, setting up the loom, knotting by hand, and completing the project. It can take anywhere from weeks to months or even years, depending on the complexity of the design. In this particular rug, only natural wool fibers are used, although silk and cotton are also common. It is spun by hand, and piled together so the yarn is strong enough to be used for weaving. The wool is soft, durable and easy to work with. The dyes, as mentioned before all made from plants, red for example, can be made from roots. The Turkish carpets are distinct from others because of its use of primary colors. As we see in this traditional rug, there is a center medallion with floral decorations, with shades of red, green, blue and yellow. There is a solid blue background, with four corner medallions of blue and red. The main and guardian borders both have a floral motif with multiple colors
