Persian carpets are made in the area known as the ‘rug belt’. They stand out by the variety and elaborateness of its manifold designs. They are woven by various peoples, from villages and nomadic tribes to royal court manufactories. They represent lines of tradition and reflect on the history of its country and people. The carpets woven in the sixteenth century are famous for their elaborate colors and artistic designs, they are treasured by museums and private collectors all over the world today. In the late fifteenth century, large format medallions appeared in the designs for the rugs. Also, ornaments began to show elaborate curvilinear designs. Along with spirals and tendrils, floral ornaments, depictions of flowers and animals were mirrored along the carpet to obtain a rhythm and harmony. These patterns required a more complex system of weaving, rather than a straight weave, if needed rectilinear lines. This meant artist needed to create a design for the weavers to execute on the loom. The result of their work was known as the ‘carpet design revolution’. This also established a ‘classical’ design for the rugs: the medallion and corner designs. The medallion is a symmetrical pattern occupying the center of the field and similar designs are repeated at the four corners of the field. This often goes along with the field of the rug being surrounded by stripes, or borders. Like in this case, we see a wider main border surrounded by minor, or guardian borders. The main border is filled with a complex and elaborate curvilinear designs. The minor border stripes show simpler designs like small interweaving vines. This is a traditional border arrangement that has been highly conserved through time. The colors are mostly blues, browns, or ivory and black. Dyes are obtained from plants, vegetables and sometimes even insects. It works very well with the natural material used to make the rugs. The wool used, is obtained from sheep’s. In this case, it is used along with silk. They both have a high quality strength that gives it a long lasting durability. This makes it an exceptionally fine carpet, with a beautiful and elaborate design.
