The city of Mashhad has been a center of production of Persian carpets for many years. It is one of the oldest centers of carpet weaving. Mostly, large carpets with medallions are made, which are also sold under the name of Meshed. Mashhad rugs and carpets are mostly curvilinear with a single central medallion, corner floral designs and curvilinear floral motifs in the background. The actual city of Mashhad is known for producing some of the best wool in Iran. That makes these rugs and carpets very high quality and among the best looking in Iran and in the world. The main colors used are, dark red, blue and khaki. They represent more than just a design. They represent traditions and reflect the history of its various peoples. They are characterized by their weaving techniques and use of high quality materials, radiant colors and stunning patterns. This rug has a main border and two guardian borders with floral motifs. In the center we also see the use of geometrical yet, floral patterns. These rugs take a lot more time to make because the weaver must be very careful to capture every detail correctly. A rug like this can take anywhere from months to years to complete. That’s what makes them unique, as no pattern is set out, each weaver uses their own imagination when creating a rug.
