New Wool Chinese Needlepoint 4 x 6 Rug 4958 with black background and multi color designs.

This beautiful rug has a needlepoint structure. This is a form of counted thread embroidery in which the yarn is stitched through a stiff open weave canvas. The one we see is a simple tent stitch that depends upon the different colored yarn to construct the pattern. This is different from weaving and embroidery because instead of embedding a fabric this creates a new fabric. That is why such a sturdy stitch is used. It guarantees its long lasting high quality durability.

In this case we see a solid black background and on the edge an ivory outline. In the center there is a four petal flower with two flower halos surrounding it. The first using brown and red leaves. The second has ivory and blue flowers. In this elegant motif we see an overlap of ivory ribbon and a string of leaves and flowers. Towards the edge where ivory is used as the background we see a use of more color as the flowers have a pale blue in them. There is also some brown in the little leaves around the delicate flowers. Its admirable that even thought the stitch makes a little cube, the artist here was able to make many shapes. Even with the square shape the artist made well use of circles, bends and curves throughout this masterpiece.
