Antique Turkish Oushak hand knotted wool Oriental rug

Oushak carpets belong in a particular family of designs, called after the city of Usak, Turkey. The city was a major center of rug production from the Ottoman Empire, into the early 20th century. Oushak rugs are some of the finest Oriental Rugs, the star and medallion carpets originated in Oushak. They are known for their silky, luminous wool. The colors lean towards, cinnamons, gold, blues, greens, ivory, saffron and grays. In the 19th century Oushak re-surfaced as a center of the weaving industry. During that time weavers came from the villages and employed tribal techniques in the rugs. The tribal style fused with the older Ushak designs. This new style was simply known as late 19th and early 20th century Oushak carpets. They have a soft red primary color and large-scale floral motifs from the field in bright blue. The luxurious quality of the wool aided the colors luminosity. In fact, they are often characterized by large dark blue star shaped primary medallions, repeating on a red ground field. The concept of the infinite repeat in star Ushak carpets keeps the early Turkish design tradition. Because they use a repeating pattern they can be used in various sizes and in many dimensions. This rug has reds and browns. It has a border all around with a small floral motif. It has a great combination of a vintage yet contemporary style. It makes a great addition to any room.
