Hand knotted rugs are an essential part of Persian culture and art. They are made in what is known as the ‘rug belt’. They stand out because of the variety and elaborateness of its manifold designs. They represent different traditions and reflect the history of Iran and its various peoples. Their patterns and designs have set an artistic traditional court manufactures which was kept alive during the entire duration of the Persian Empire up to the last royal dynasty of Iran. They are woven by the villages and different tribes of Iran. They’re distinguished by their fine wool, bright and elaborate colors and specific, traditional patterns. They are made of sheep wool. However nomadic weavers produce rugs with bolder and more coarse designs, which are considered more authentic and traditional. They are still dyed with natural dyes, along with traditional tribal patterns, woven in the centuries-old technique. Master weavers in modern times make their carpets in the traditional techniques but with more modern designs. This rug in particular is composed of an overall zigzag and diamond pattern. The smaller designs have tiny diamonds with red, ivory, pink and a little bit of black.
