Hamadan is a city in the west part of Iran. It is one of the world’s oldest cities. The city is the center for trading with carpets that are made in the hundreds of nearby villages and cities. They are recognized for their typical patterns and sizes. They often use medallions and repeated patterns. The colors are principally indigo blue and madder red. They are very durable and have a beautiful color scale. The patterns used are mostly geometrical, but floral motifs also occur. These older carpets are made from wool warp, very different from today’s cotton warp. They have kept their historical role in reviving the tradition of carpet weaving and using high-quality materials. Hand-woven Persian carpets and rugs were regarded as objects of high artistic and utilitarian value prestige from the first time they were mentioned by ancient Greek writers, until today. Woven rugs probably developed from earlier floor covering. Made of felt or using the flat weaving technique. They are made by tightly interweaving the warp and weft strands of the weave to produce a flat surface. In the late fifteenth century, the design changed considerably. Large format medallions appeared and ornaments began to show elaborate curvilinear designs. Also, large spirals and tendrils as well as floral ornaments, depictions of flowers and animals were used to obtain an overall harmony and rhythm. All these patterns required a more elaborate system of weaving as compared to it being straight. This also means they require artist to create the design. The result was termed the ‘carpet design revolution’. Traditional hand woven carpets are made of sheep wool dyed with natural colors are increasingly sought after. The manual work associated with their production, has not changed since ancient times, due to the artistic value of their design. The Persian carpet has retained its ancient status as an object of luxury, beauty and art. This particular carpet has an unusual pink background. It has ivory ruffles on both ends of the rug. There is also the traditional medallion in the center. This is a perfect example of a very well thought out and elaborate design.
